Description of site: The site is the garden ground to the rear of a detached house in a quiet street in the village of Wallacestone on the edge of Falkirk. The site sloped up away from the house and was awkward in shape with none of the boundaries being parallel to the house. A garage which backs onto the garden is sited parallel to the boundary giving an uneasy relationship between it and the house. The total area of the site under consideration was approximately 300m 2.Most of the area was mainly in grass with some shrub planting round edges and the lower area mainly paved with concrete slabs. There was a Leylandii hedge round much of the garden and a concrete block wall separating the garden from the neighbour's drive at a higher level. Although the site faces South giving a sunny aspect, the slope faced to the North and any high planting would cast shadows. There were signs of drainage problems particularly on the slope in the Eastern part of the garden. Client's brief: The clients were looking for ideas first and foremost. In particular how to deal with the difficult levels. They wanted to create a useable space which has a feeling of privacy with a paved area close to the back door and places to sit at the top of the garden which make use of the good views out over the Forth valley. They wanted a garden that they could use for entertaining with space for 20-25 people. They wanted at least one good wide terrace, an area to hang a washing line and some lawn. In terms of style they like flowers, especially those with warm colours, but like all styles of planting and were open to the unusual. They like organic shapes and natural materials, liking to mix different materials. They were interested in the possibility of lighting. Current situation: The hard landscape contract is complete and the first two phases of planting have been carried out.
