SAM McGOWAN - GARDEN
DESIGN IN SCOTLAND
Description of site: The site was the garden ground to the rear of a terraced house in a quiet cul-de-sac just off Corstorphine Road in the West of Edinburgh. The garden is generally East facing and slightly awkward in shape with a boundary wall running at a slight angle away from the house. The total area of the site under consideration was approximately 65m 2.The garden was bounded by brick walls with the one bordering the lane to the back in an unstable state and in need of rebuilding. There is a gate onto this lane. Privacy was a concern with a neighbour constructing an extension which would overlook the garden. Client's brief: The garden had to be treated as a blank space. The client wanted to create a private, useable space in the style of an Italian courtyard. He wanted 'a traditional garden with a design edge'. He was looking for ideas. On the practical side, a shed or some similar form of storage was required. Current situation: The hard landscape contract is complete and the planting has been carried out.
