Description of site: The site was a fairly abandoned front garden in the South Central area of Edinburgh. The garden is the main garden for the house and was dominated by the driveway cutting through it to the garages at the rear. The garden did not function well, with the main grassed area only accessible from immediately in front of the house and poor circulation. There was little sense of mystery and little privacy. Client's brief: To create a garden of interest with different areas for sitting, eating and entertaining. Privacy was considered a major concern. The original brief was for a garden for adults but part way through the creation of the garden the clients had a child. However, the garden continued to function well with little or no alterations to the original design concept, although a child's play area was created to the rear of the house.
