Description of site: The site was the garden ground to the rear of a newly-constructed, detached house in a quiet cul-de-sac in the village of Balmore, East Dunbartonshire. The garden is generally south facing. The ground slopes away from the house, although the exact lie of the land would not be known until the builder had spread topsoil and withdrawn from the site. The total area of garden ground is approximately 440m 2.There are fences on the boundary to the west and it was assumed that further fencing would be constructed on the east boundary (proven correct). The quality of topsoil to be spread by the builder would have to be ascertained (subsequent soil testing showed major problems with the supplied soil) as would any possible drainage questions. At the time of the initial visit the site was covered in hardcore, builders’ huts and building debris and it was assumed that this will all be removed and any compacted surfaces well broken up before spreading of topsoil. The client was to keep this under observation. There is a good outlook to fields and woodland (behind which lies the client’s golf club) to the south.. Client's brief: In the first instance the clients were mainly looking for ideas. They were looking for a garden which is contemporary with clean, strong lines and the minimum of fussiness. They like strong colour. Although they don’t mind doing odd work in the garden aftercare would be an issue and so cutting down on maintenance was considered. Golf is important to them. Drainage had proved to be an issue in their existing garden and was considered as a priority. Things particularly requested were: 1. A putting green. 2. A trickle of water 3. Garden lighting from a mains supply. 4. Good quality garden furniture. 5. Some lawn in conjunction with putting surface. 6. A patio area large enough for eating out, possibly decking. 7. A summerhouse. Current situation: Project complete |
