Description of site: The site was the garden ground to the rear of a recently-built detached house on the edge of Balerno to the West of Edinburgh. The house is on the edge of the Edinburgh Green Belt (the boundary of which runs through the garden). The site is approximately 450m2. The garden faces South and sloped down from the house to a nearby field. Drainage was poor but the builders had agreed to deal with this by mole-ploughing (since carried out but additional drainage was installed as part of the works). Nearby trees provide good shelter but two Sycamores (one in the nearby field and one in the South-west corner of the garden) will cast significant shade in Summer. The clients were hoping to have a garden room constructed on the South-west corner of the house (drawing had been provided to illustrate this) and were waiting to hear if outline planning permission had been granted (this permission subsequently came through). The clients have 2 children. She is keen on gardening but he isn't. There was already a small shed in the South-west corner of the garden. Client's brief: The client thinks the garden is as important as the house. There are certain things that she definitely wanted: A patio/deck with a water feature and room for seating A cedar greenhouse Raised vegetable beds (3 or 4) Privacy in some areas Planting to attract wildlife (birds in particular) A walnut tree Some lawn Hammamelis Things that she particularly likes are: Evergreen shrubs A pergola Paeonies Hellebores Clematis Things that she dislikes: Orange flowers Grasses Rock gardens Grass up to hard edges (this occasioned some discussion) She wanted some planting to complement the Snowdrops that had been planted round the base of the existing Sycamore in the garden. She wanted some lighting (close to the house) but was happy to discuss this further as the design proceeds. Current situation: Phases 1 and 2 hard landscape contracts are complete and the majority of the planting carried out. |
